Do: Sound sort. Read each word and sort it into piles by its two-letter sound. Underline the two letters that stick together.

You need: Word cards: ship, shop, chip, chin, thin, moth, ring, sing

Talk: How many sounds are in 'ship'? (three: sh-i-p)

Writing a Sentence
Week 1 of about 5

Do: Say it, count it, write it. Choose a sentence together ('I can run fast.'). Say it, count the words on fingers, then write it, leaving a finger space after each word.

Do: Ten in the bed. Sing 'Ten in the bed'. When some fall out, how many are left in the bed? 'Seven in bed, three on the floor: seven and three make ten.'

Do: Who am I?. Give clues one at a time: 'I am an animal. I have a long neck. I eat leaves from tall trees.' Your child guesses after each clue.
