Plan a Movement Route

Goal: Plan a short route using position words and adjust movements to send and receive a soft ball.

For parents: Use a clear, level, non-slip floor and stay nearby. Keep boxes well apart and never climb on them. A route can be followed by a person, by seated arm movements or with a large toy. Choose a comfortable challenge together.

Do together

  1. Choose the route

You need: Two light cardboard boxes checked by an adult

Put the boxes on the floor with plenty of room around them. Ask your child to plan two moves: go beside one box, then behind the other. Follow their instructions. Swap roles and add a pause at the end.

  2. Send from a new place

You need: A large soft ball and an open checked box

Choose a nearby place for an underarm throw or roll into the box. Try from a little nearer or further away. Ask your child which place makes a useful next challenge. Keep everyone clear of the throwing route.

  3. Move, pause, receive

    You need: The soft ball

Invite your child to make one comfortable sideways step or seated reach, then settle. Wait until they signal ready before a gentle low throw or roll. Let them choose a closer distance and send the ball back. Aim for shared control, not a score.

Talk about it

  • Can you describe your route with beside and behind?
  • Which distance shall we try next?
  • How will I know you are ready for the ball?
