Long Vowel Sounds: ai ee igh oa oo

Goal: Read words with long vowel sounds such as rain, see, night, boat and moon.

For parents: These are the sounds that make reading suddenly feel grown-up. Expect it to take a while; revisit them often.

Do together

  1. Sound of the week wall

    You need: A big sheet of paper

    Write the sound of the week (say 'ee') at the top. Every time you find an ee word in a book or on a sign, write it on the wall.

  2. Real or silly?

    You need: Word cards, two boxes marked 'real' and 'silly'

    Read words like boat, joat, feet, keet, rain, bain. Sort them. It proves your child is reading, not guessing.

  3. Picture and word match

    You need: Simple drawings (moon, tree, train, light, coat) and their word cards

    Read each word and put it under its picture.

Talk about it

  • Which two letters make the 'ai' sound in 'rain'?
  • What other words rhyme with 'moon'?
  • Can you find 'ee' in this book?
