Reading Words with ar and or

Goal: Recognise ar and or in familiar words, blend those words and notice rhyming endings.

For parents: Look at ar as a written group in car, and or in fork. Say each word naturally in your family's accent; some speakers pronounce the r more clearly than others. Do not require a fixed sound count here. Teach one group first, then compare the two.

Do together

  1. Read an ar ending

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write car, jar and far. Underline ar in each word. Say that part as you hear it in car, then join it to each first sound. Read the whole words normally. Explain far using a familiar distance. Notice the shared rhyming ending without changing your child's accent.

  2. Find or inside a word

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write for, fork and corn. Underline or, then say and read each word together, helping with the sounds around the group. Draw a fork and corn; use for in a spoken phrase such as 'a book for Sara'. Contrast the written groups in car and corn.

  3. Choose, read and sort

    You need: Large paper word cards prepared by an adult

    Write car, jar, far, for, fork and corn on cards. Read each before placing it under 'ar' or 'or'. Ask which ar words rhyme. Explain that sharing the letters or does not make for and fork rhyme.

  • Which letters make the shared ending in car and jar?
  • Where can you see or in fork?
  • Do for and fork rhyme, or do their endings differ?
