Labels on a Room Map

Goal: Write short labels on a simple room map and use them to guide a reader along a drawn route.

For parents: A map shows where things are. Draw a pretend room as if looking down from above; no climbing or measuring is needed. Choose only two or three objects. Share spellings and accept sound-based attempts. This is about useful labels and positions, not an exact plan of your home.

Do together

  1. Plan a room from above

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Draw a large rectangle for a pretend room. Mark a doorway, a mat and a box with simple shapes. Talk about looking down in imagination. Your child decides where the box sits beside the mat and leaves room for labels.

  2. Write the place names

    You need: The map and a pencil

    Say mat and box together. Your child writes familiar sounds in each label while you help with the rest. Put each word close to its shape. Read both labels, checking that the reader can tell which object each names.

  3. Use and check the labels

    You need: The labelled map and a crayon

    Draw a route from the doorway to the mat, then the box. Ask a reader at home to follow it with a finger, using the labels. Describe the box as beside the mat. Adjust a label or route if its meaning is unclear.

Talk about it

  • Where will the box sit beside the mat?
  • Which shape does this label name?
  • Can our reader follow the drawn route?
