Two Pictures with Speech Bubbles

Goal: Write a short exchange in two speech bubbles and show which character says each line.

For parents: A speech bubble holds a character's spoken words. Its tail points towards the speaker. Use two pictures and one short line in each. Say the exchange first, then share spelling and punctuation. Your child can dictate unfamiliar words while contributing known ones. Characters and dialogue are your own.

Do together

  1. Give each character a turn

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Draw two boxes for a tiny comic. Invent Ali and Sara looking for a book. Say two lines, such as "Can you help?" and "I can look." Decide who speaks first and what happens in the second picture. Your child can change the exchange.

  2. Put speech in its bubble

    You need: The pictures and a pencil

    Draw one roomy bubble in each box, with its tail towards the speaker. Write the chosen lines together, sharing unfamiliar spellings. Help add a question mark or full stop where needed. Read a common word such as can or you in the writing.

  3. Check who said it

    You need: The comic and a pencil

    Read the exchange with someone at home, taking one character each. Follow the bubble tails to find each speaker. Ask whether the second line answers the first. Change a word or tail if needed; keep the amount of writing short.

Talk about it

  • Who says the first line?
  • Where should this bubble's tail point?
  • Does the reply fit the question?
