A Small Fact Page

Goal: Write a heading and two short factual sentences about something they can observe.

For parents: A fact says something we can check. Use an everyday object, such as a cup, and describe what you can see. A heading names the topic. Keep to two short sentences, sharing spelling as needed. Save opinions such as 'best' for a different kind of writing.

Do together

  1. Look before writing

    You need: An unbreakable cup, paper and a pencil

    Look at one cup together. Say two things you can check by looking, such as its colour and whether it has a handle. Choose a short heading for the page. Your child writes familiar words while you help with unfamiliar ones.

  2. Write two facts

    You need: The cup, paper and a pencil

    Help your child write two short sentences that match this cup. Say each first, then leave spaces between words. Add a capital and full stop with help. Read a common word such as the or is together while checking the writing.

  3. Fact or favourite?

    You need: The page and a pencil

    Suggest adding "This is the best cup." Discuss why that tells a preference instead of something everyone can check by looking. Reread the two facts beside the cup. Share the page with a reader and adjust anything that does not match.
