Question Words and Understanding

Goal: Answer and ask who, what, where, when, why and how questions about what they read.

For parents: Class 1 books ask comprehension questions after each passage. Practise out loud first; writing the answers comes later.

Do together

  1. Question dice

    You need: A paper cube or dice with a question word on each face

    After reading a page, roll the dice and ask a question starting with that word. Then your child rolls and asks you.

  2. Find the answer

    You need: A short passage

    Ask a question and let your child find the sentence that answers it, pointing with a finger.

  3. Why? Why? Why?

    You need: A story

    Ask 'Why did the character do that?' The answer is not always written — your child must think. Accept any answer they can explain.

Talk about it

  • Where did the story happen?
  • Why do you think she was sad?
  • What question would you ask the author?
