Writing About My Day

Goal: Write a short recount of a real event in order, using time words and capital letters for names and days.

For parents: Recounts are the most common writing task in Class 1. Talk about the event first, then plan with the time words before writing.

Do together

  1. Weekend diary

    You need: A notebook

    Every Sunday evening, your child writes three to five sentences about the weekend and draws a picture.

  2. Time word ladder

    You need: A card: First, Next, Then, After that, Finally

    Use the ladder to plan: say one sentence for each step before writing any of them.

  3. Capital letter check

    You need: A coloured pencil

    After writing, your child checks with the coloured pencil: a capital at the start, and capitals for names, places and days of the week.
