A Letter with News

Goal: Write a short personal letter that shares news and asks the reader a question.

For parents: Choose someone your family knows who would welcome a letter. A greeting names the reader and a sign-off shows who wrote it. Two sentences are enough: one piece of news and one question. Share difficult spellings. The letter can be handed over or read aloud; posting is unnecessary.

Do together

  1. Plan for this reader

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Choose a willing relative or familiar person. Say one piece of news they may enjoy and one question you would like to ask. Write the greeting together, including the reader's name. Let your child choose a warm opening.

  2. Write news and a question

    You need: The paper and a pencil

    Write the news in one short sentence. Add the question on another line, with a question mark. Help with unfamiliar words and check a common word together. Add a sign-off and your child's name so the reader knows who wrote it.

  3. Read it as the receiver

    You need: The letter

    Read the letter together as if receiving it. Can the reader tell what happened and which question to answer? Add a missing detail if useful. Help your child share it with the intended person. Explain that a reply may take time.

  • What news would this person enjoy?
  • Which question would you like them to answer?
  • How will they know who wrote the letter?
