Tell Me About This Picture

Goal: Share a picture, name or show an action and remember a familiar detail when looking again.

For parents: Follow your child's pointing and add one useful word, such as "cat sleeping" after "cat". Words, sounds and gestures in any home language count. No full sentence is expected. Use a familiar book or your own large drawings. Stay beside your child and stop whenever they lose interest.

Do together

  1. Add an action

    You need: A picture book or large adult-drawn pictures

    Look at a picture your child chooses. Name something they point to, then add its action: "The dog is running." Wait for a gesture, sound or word. Copy their contribution and add a little more if welcome; this is a conversation, not a quiz.

  2. Show me the action

    You need: The same book or drawings

    Point to an action in the picture, such as waving or sleeping. Show it with a small, comfortable seated gesture. Let your child join, point or watch. Say the action word again while looking at the picture together.

  3. Back to our picture

    You need: The same book or drawings

    Turn to another page briefly, then ask about one familiar thing from the first picture. Turn back straight away to look together. Name it again and recall its action. Another look is always allowed; there is no need to answer from memory alone.
