Stories and Puppets

Goal: Listen to a short story, join in with repeated lines and retell parts of it with puppets.

For parents: Stories with a repeating line ('Run, run, as fast as you can…') let children join in and feel like readers before they can read.

Do together

  1. Join-in stories

    You need: A story with a repeated line

    Read the same story every night this week. Pause at the repeated line and let your child say it.

  2. Spoon puppets

    You need: Wooden spoons or paper plates on sticks, markers

    Draw a face for each character. Act out the story together, then let your child be the storyteller.

  3. What happened?

    You need: Nothing

    After a story, ask three questions: Who was in it? What happened? How did it end? Help with the words if needed.

Talk about it

  • Who was your favourite character?
  • What did the wolf say?
  • What would you do if you were the little pig?
