Cloth Prints and Outdoor Lines

Goal: Explore different marks with a whole cloth and use straight and curved movements in outdoor play.

For parents: An adult stays beside your child, especially with optional washable, age-suitable paint. Use what you have; broad crayon marks work too. Keep materials out of mouths and wash hands afterwards. Choose a clear, level outdoor space away from roads and water, or play indoors. Movements can be seated.

Do together

  1. Press a cloth corner

You need: An old hand towel, paper and optional washable paint or crayons

Fold the towel into a broad pad with a corner to hold. Help your child dab it lightly in paint and press onto paper. Turn the pad and compare the next mark. Without paint, draw around the folded cloth and colour the outline. Keep the cloth whole.

  2. Slide a straight or curved mark

You need: The cloth, paper and optional paint or crayons

Hold the paper steady while your child slides the paint-damp cloth a short way. Compare a straight slide with a curved one. Make the same paths with a crayon if preferred. Try one mark at a time and describe how the hand moved.

  3. Draw a line with your movement

You need: A safe outdoor space

Outside, draw an imaginary straight line in the air with your arm, then a curve. Let your child copy and lead. If comfortable, take a few steps along an imagined straight or curved line beside each other. Seated arm movements explore the same shapes; no objects need collecting.

Talk about it

  • What changed when we turned the cloth?
  • How can your hand make a curved mark?
  • Which line shall we make outside?
