Beat, Pattern and Dance

Goal: Join a steady beat and copy a short repeating pattern with sounds and movements.

For parents: A beat is a steady pulse; a pattern is a set of actions that repeats. Begin with two actions. Keep sounds gentle and clear the floor. Your child can make every movement while seated, or watch before joining in.

Do together

  1. Our quiet drum

You need: An unbreakable empty bowl with a smooth rim

Put the bowl upside down on a steady surface. Tap it softly with open hands, one tap after another. Invite your child to join in. Stop together, then let them start a new beat. Do not use loose fillings or loud banging.

  2. Clap and touch

    You need: Your hands

Clap once, then touch your knees once. Repeat slowly: clap, touch, clap, touch. Ask your child to join the repeating pair. If they want a change, choose two new actions and practise those together.

  3. A dance for our pretend picnic

You need: A clear floor space

Pretend you are welcoming Ali and Sara to a picnic. Choose two movements, such as wave and sway. Repeat them to your own quiet hum. Let your child lead and choose when to finish. There are no required words or tune.

Talk about it

  • Can you hear our steady taps?
  • Which action comes after the clap?
  • What two movements shall we repeat?
