Write a Message for Someone

Goal: Choose words for a short message, form familiar letters and check that a reader understands the request.

For parents: A message has a real reader and a purpose. Your child can dictate unfamiliar words while writing known letters and words. Discuss the sounds and spellings they know. The reader's response helps you check meaning without correcting every mark at once.

Do together

  1. Choose the reader

You need: Paper and a pencil

Ask who might use a short message, such as Abba, a sibling or another carer. Choose a real small request. Say it aloud together, for example 'Please put my book on the table.' Help your child decide which object and place the reader needs to know.

  2. Write it together

You need: The paper and pencil

Let your child write familiar words or letters while you help with the rest. Read the message together, pointing to each word. Add a drawing if useful. Include the recipient's name if it helps the message reach the right person.

  3. Did the message work?

You need: The message and a willing reader at home

Give the note to its reader. Ask them to say what they think it means before acting on it. If an object or place is unclear, choose one useful word to add or change together. Write a fresh copy only if your child wants to.

Talk about it

  • Who will read your message?
  • Which words tell the reader what to do?
  • What could we add to make the request clearer?
