Sound, Light and Shadows

Goal: Make loud and quiet sounds, find where light comes from and make shadows.

For parents: Explore sound with gentle taps and light with a torch held by an adult. A dim room is enough for shadows. Keep the floor clear, sounds comfortable and the torch pointed away from eyes.

Do together

  1. Shadow puppets

    You need: A torch, a wall, your hands

    An adult holds a torch towards a wall in a dim room with a clear floor. Make hand shadows together without pointing the torch into eyes. Move the hand nearer the torch and then nearer the wall to compare the shadow.

  2. Light sources hunt

    You need: The house, day and evening

    Together, notice a lamp or screen giving light and a spoon reflecting it. Observe sunlight on the floor; never look directly at the sun. Adults handle switches, lamps and electrical items. No flames are needed.

  3. Home-made drum

    You need: An unbreakable container

    Tap the container gently with your fingertips. Try a quieter tap, then a slightly louder one at a comfortable listening level. Keep it away from ears and stop if the sound is uncomfortable.
