Sound, Light and Shadows

Goal: Make loud and quiet sounds, find where light comes from and make shadows.

For parents: Light and sound are invisible but easy to play with. A torch in a dark room is the whole lesson.

Do together

  1. Shadow puppets

    You need: A torch, a wall, your hands

    Make animal shadows. Move your hand closer to the torch: does the shadow grow or shrink?

  2. Light sources hunt

    You need: The house, day and evening

    Find things that give light (the sun, a lamp, a phone screen, a candle) and things that only reflect it (a mirror, a spoon).

  3. Home-made drum

    You need: An empty tin or pot, a spoon

    Tap softly, then hard. Tap near and far away from someone. How does the sound change?

  • Where does light come from at night?
  • Why do we have shadows?
  • How can you make a quiet sound?
