Rhythm and Role Play

Goal: Repeat a short rhythm and choose voice, movement and sounds for a character's feelings.

For parents: Rhythm is a pattern of sounds and quiet gaps. Keep sounds gentle and the floor clear. Your child may speak, gesture, make sounds or direct your acting. Ask about the character's feelings rather than deciding from one facial expression.

Do together

  1. Echo my rhythm

You need: Your hands and an unbreakable empty bowl with a smooth rim

Tap the bowl softly with your hands: tap, tap, pause. Invite your child to copy. Let them lead a pattern for you to echo. Keep to a few sounds so the pattern can be remembered without rushing.

  2. The missing picnic cup

You need: A large unbreakable cup

Make up a scene in which Ali cannot find his picnic cup. Ask how he might feel and let your child choose his words and movements. Pretend a friend helps him find it. Try different feelings that could fit the same event.

  3. Sounds for the scene

You need: The bowl and cup

Choose a quiet rhythm for the search and a different sound for finding the cup. Act the scene together with the sounds in the chosen places. Swap roles. Ask whether a sound should be softer, slower or left out to tell the story clearly.

Talk about it

  • Where is the quiet gap in your rhythm?
  • How might Ali feel while he is looking?
  • Which sound helps us notice what changed?
