Two Sounds of oo

Goal: Read familiar oo words using moon and book as examples, and listen for rhyming endings.

For parents: Say words naturally in your own accent, especially book. Families may say its vowel differently; your child need not change their accent. The letters oo work together here. Introduce book beside familiar moon, then help your child try each reading in a word. Explain unfamiliar meanings.

Do together

  1. Open the word

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write moon and book on folded paper, with only oo showing. Open each fold and read the whole word together. Listen to your usual pronunciation. Explain that seeing oo alone does not always tell us how the whole word sounds.

  2. Read for a partner

    You need: Paper, a pencil and a book

    Write book and moon separately. Read one together; your child shows the book or draws a moon for you to guess. Swap roles. Let your child read before showing the object or drawing, with help whenever needed.

  3. Hear the ending

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write moon and soon. Read them together and hear their matching endings. Try book and look next, using your own accent. Let your child choose a pair and say it to someone at home. You write the words as they point to oo.
