A Puppet with a Feeling

Goal: Make and move a simple hand puppet, choosing gestures or words for its feelings.

For parents: Use a clean whole sock with a face drawn by an adult, or fold paper into a puppet. No buttons, beads, pins or glued eyes are needed. Keep the puppet away from faces, and sit comfortably. Your child may direct your hands or voice instead of performing.

Do together

  1. Give our puppet a face

    You need: A sock or paper, and crayons or a washable marker

    With your child, choose a face to draw on the puppet. Slip a hand inside the sock and try opening and closing the fingers gently. For paper, fold a sheet and open and close the fold. Let your child choose a name for the character.

  2. Show more than a face

    You need: The puppet

    Pretend the puppet is waiting for a friend. Ask how it might feel. Try a small wave, a slow droop or a cheerful nod. Your child chooses the feeling and movement. Explain that the same face can go with different feelings in different situations.

  3. A tiny puppet meeting

    You need: The puppet and an optional second sock

    Make a short scene: the friend arrives, asks how the puppet feels and listens. Use your hand as the friend if needed. Let your child move the puppet, speak or direct you. Change one gesture to show what happens at the end.

  • What might it feel while waiting?
  • Which gesture helps tell the ending?
