Step or Hop Along a Number Grid

Goal: Move with control along a short numbered grid, pausing and following numbers in order.

For parents: An adult draws with washable chalk only if already available, on dry, level, non-slip ground away from roads and water. Stay nearby. Use large adjoining squares and small steps; hopping is optional. No stones, races or jumping gaps. A paper grid with seated finger steps is a full alternative.

Do together

  1. Read our short route

    You need: Washable chalk and safe ground, or paper and crayons

    Draw four adjoining squares in one row, labelled 1 to 4. Point along them together in number order. Let your child walk slowly from square to square, pausing with both feet steady. Seated players can take finger steps on a paper version.

  2. Choose one gentle hop

    You need: The same grid

    At a chosen square, offer one small hop on the spot with your hand available for support. Return to two steady feet before moving on. Walking or finger steps are equally welcome. Say the next number before entering its square; stop for discomfort.

  3. Guide my turn

    You need: The grid and a comfortable waiting place

    Your child points to the numbers as you move slowly through them. Swap roles when both are ready. Ask which square comes next and pause there together. Keep the same short route; a clear instruction matters more than speed or extra hops.
