Story Time

Goal: Retell a simple story in order using first, next and last, and answer questions about it.

For parents: Understanding stories matters as much as decoding words. Talk about the pictures, the characters and what might happen next.

Do together

  1. Three-picture story

    You need: Paper, crayons

    After a story, draw the beginning, the middle and the end in three boxes. Your child tells the story using the pictures: 'First… next… last…'

  2. What happens next?

    You need: A picture book they don't know

    Stop before turning a page and ask them to guess what happens next. Then turn and see.

  3. Sock puppet show

    You need: Old socks, markers

    Make a puppet for each character and act out a favourite story. Let your child change the ending.

Talk about it

  • Who was in the story? Where did it happen?
  • How did the character feel at the end?
  • What would you have done?
