Show and Tell

Goal: Speak in full sentences about something they care about, and listen and ask a question when others speak.

For parents: Talking in sentences comes before writing them. Children who can explain their ideas out loud find writing much easier later.

Do together

  1. Show and tell at dinner

    You need: One special object

    Your child shows the object and says three things about it: what it is, where it came from and why they like it. Everyone asks one question.

  2. Phone call pretend

    You need: Two toy or pretend phones

    Call your child and ask about their day. Encourage full sentences: 'I played with my blocks.'

  3. Describe it, guess it

    You need: A bag of objects

    Your child picks one without showing you and describes it: 'It is round and red and you can eat it.' You guess.

Talk about it

  • Can you tell me more about that?
  • What question could you ask your sister?
  • How did that make you feel?
