Plants and Seeds

Goal: Grow a plant from a seed and name its parts and what it needs.

For parents: Nothing beats watching a real seed sprout. Chickpeas, moong or mustard seeds sprout in two or three days.

Do together

  1. Seeds in a cup

    You need: A clear unbreakable cup, damp kitchen paper and a few seeds handled by an adult

    An adult places the seeds between the cup and damp paper so they can be seen. Put the cup where an adult controls access. Look together each day and draw what changes. Keep seeds and growing material out of mouths, wash hands after handling, and let an adult discard anything mouldy.

  2. Plant diary

    You need: A few sheets of paper stapled together

    Draw the seed each day or two. Write the day and how tall it is.

  3. Leaf rubbing walk

    You need: Paper, crayons with the paper peeled off

    Collect leaves outside. Put paper over a leaf and rub with the side of a crayon. Compare the shapes.

Talk about it

  • What does a plant need to grow?
  • Which part grew first, the root or the shoot?
  • Which plants do we eat?
