Goal: Learn the next set of letter sounds and read more words with them.

For parents: c and k make the same sound — that is fine to tell them. Keep reading real words every day; sounds on their own soon feel pointless.

Do together

  1. Sound snap

    You need: Letter cards and picture cards

    Turn over a letter and a picture at the same time. If the picture starts with that sound, the first to shout 'snap!' wins the pair.

  2. Pick a word

    You need: Large paper cards and a pencil

    An adult writes hot, bug, red, fun and leg on separate large cards. Lay them face down. Your child chooses one, turns it over and tries reading it. Help with a sound if needed, then say the whole word together. Keep cards in use so every word gets another turn.

  3. Word of the day on the door

    You need: Paper and tape

    Stick a short word on the bedroom door. Your child reads it every time they go in. Change it each morning.

Talk about it

  • Which sound is at the end of 'bus'?
  • Can you read this word? What does it mean?
  • What other words have the 'u' sound in the middle?
