A Useful Sign for Home

Goal: Choose a short sign for a shared home space and contribute familiar letters so a reader knows what to do.

For parents: A sign gives a short message where people need it. Choose a friendly reminder, such as where to put books, rather than a warning or rule about a person. Your child chooses the words and writes known letters; you supply the rest. A picture can help. No copying drill is needed.

Do together

  1. Find a useful message

    You need: Paper and crayons

Choose a shared reading or drawing place. Ask what a sign could help someone do, such as put books in a box. Say a short message together. Your child chooses a picture and a familiar letter they would like to write.

  2. Write it for the reader

You need: The paper and a crayon

Write the short message together, perhaps "Books here". Help your child form their chosen letter or word while you write unfamiliar parts. Leave room between words. Read the sign aloud, then add the picture beside the writing.

  3. Try the sign in its place

You need: The sign and a safe low display space

Place the sign where an adult agrees it will help. Ask someone at home what they think it means. Read it together if needed. Let your child add a word or clearer picture if useful, keeping the original writing visible.
