Sew a Line on Card

Goal: Coordinate both hands to pass a thread or paper strip through holes and make a repeating pattern.

For parents: An adult prepares smooth card with widely spaced holes before play and stays beside the child. If available, use a large blunt needle and short wool, never a sharp needle. No needle is needed for stiff paper strips. Keep materials away from mouths and necks; the adult collects everything afterwards.

Do together

  1. Choose a simple path

    You need: Prepared card, short wool and blunt needle, or paper strips

    An adult draws a broad line and makes four widely spaced holes along it. Count and follow the holes with a finger. The adult threads the blunt needle if used. Alternatively, prepare a narrow folded paper strip that fits easily through the holes.

  2. Through and back

    You need: The prepared card and threading material

    Stay beside your child. Steady the card with one hand. Pass the needle or strip from back to front through hole one, then alternate through all four holes. Hold a short end at the start. Pull gently; never wrap material around fingers.

  3. Look at the pattern

    You need: The threaded card and a crayon

    Follow the front of the card: thread, gap, thread. Turn it over and compare. Continue through two more adult-prepared holes if your child wishes, predicting the next visible part. Decorate beside the line. An adult removes the needle and stores the work safely.

  • What repeats on the front of our card?
