Reread and Make It Clear

Goal: Reread a short piece, put events in a clear order and revise a word or detail for the reader.

For parents: Revising means changing writing to make its meaning clearer. Focus on one useful change, not every spelling. Read aloud for your child if needed and share the writing. Keep the original visible so they can notice what their change does.

Do together

  1. Can the reader follow?

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write a short invented account: 'Sara opened it. She put the book in her bag.' Ask what the reader needs to know about 'it'. Decide that Sara opened her bag, then replace the unclear word together. Your child can dictate the change.

  2. Check the order

    You need: Two or three large paper strips

    Together write or draw three events from a familiar task, such as finding a book, opening it and reading a page. Mix them, then put them in order. Read the sequence aloud and ask whether a reader could follow it.

  3. One change to my writing

    You need: A short piece your child has written or dictated

    Read the piece aloud together. Ask your child to choose one place where a person, object or action could be clearer. Add or replace a word, writing it yourself if needed. Read both versions and talk about what the reader now knows.

  • Does this event happen before or after that one?
  • How did your change help the reader?
