Put a Small Mishap Right

Goal: Talk about an accidental mishap, consider its effect and choose a helpful repair.

For parents: Everyone has accidents. Separate what happened from labels such as naughty or careless. Help your child explain, listen and choose a repair without demanding an apology or immediate forgiveness. Practise with drawings and safe materials. An adult deals with broken, sharp or hot things.

Do together

  1. An accidental bump

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw Ali accidentally knocking over Sara's paper-cup tower. Ask how each might feel. Model "I bumped the tower. Are you all right?" Let your child suggest what could help Sara, rather than deciding that both people must feel the same.

  2. Ask before repairing

    You need: Three unbreakable cups

Make a small tower on the floor, then take it down deliberately to rehearse a pretend accident. Offer to rebuild together or leave it for later. Ask which the other person wants. Swap roles and practise listening to the answer.

  3. Tell what changed

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw before and after pictures of your pretend mishap. Your child describes what happened, who was affected and the repair they offered. Explain that someone may still feel upset after a repair. Choose where to place the cups safely next time.

Talk about it

  • How might each person feel about the tower?
  • What repair could we offer?
  • Could someone still feel upset after we help?
