Notice, Ask and Offer Help

Goal: Consider another person's feelings, ask what they want and offer help they can accept or decline.

For parents: Faces and actions give clues, not certain answers about feelings. Ask and listen. Your child is not responsible for making someone happy or solving adult worries. Practise small everyday offers; respect a no. For anything unsafe, get a trusted adult instead of tackling it together.

Do together

  1. More than one explanation

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw Mia sitting beside an unfinished picture. Ask what she might feel: tired, content or disappointed could all fit. Add a speech bubble asking, "Would you like company?" Discuss how her answer tells us more than the picture alone.

  2. Offer, then wait

    You need: Paper and crayons

Pretend you are drawing and cannot reach a crayon. Your child asks whether you want help before passing it. Swap roles. Sometimes say, "No, thank you." Practise accepting that answer without insisting or taking over the picture.

  3. Check the offer

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw a pretend child upset about a torn picture. Suggest asking whether they want company, help or space. Your child chooses words for the offer. Invent the reply together and act on it. Explain when getting an adult would be useful.

Talk about it

  • What else might Mia be feeling?
  • How could we ask without guessing?
  • What could we do if someone says no?
