Our Neighbourhood

Goal: Describe familiar places and the people who help there, and follow a simple picture map.

For parents: A neighbourhood is the area around a home. Yours may be a village, a busy street or a group of flats. Use familiar places; a map made from memory is enough and need not show your address.

Do together

  1. Places and people

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Draw two nearby places your child knows, such as a shop and a clinic. Ask what people do there and who helps. Talk about a helper's work without assuming their gender. You can add a place your family visits further away.

  2. A little map

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Draw a pretend neighbourhood with a home, shop and park. Add paths and a simple symbol for each place. Explain that a map shows where places are. Your child traces a route with a finger and describes what is beside the path.

  3. A helpful journey

    You need: Your picture map

    Pretend Sara needs a book or Ali needs to buy daal. Ask which place could help and trace a route there. Swap roles and let your child set a task. If you notice real places on a walk, keep your child beside you and manage every road crossing.

  • Who helps here, and what do they do?
  • Which places will we pass on our pretend route?
