Hear Both Sides

Goal: Listen to two wishes in a disagreement and help choose a fair plan both people can accept.

For parents: Stay nearby and help each person speak or point without interruption. You can say what you heard and check you understood. Fair need not mean identical. No one has to give away a treasured belonging; use shared materials for these pretend disagreements.

Do together

  1. Tell me your wish

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw Ali and Eva choosing a shared drawing space. Ali wants room for a bus; Eva wants room for a garden. Speak for each person in turn. Your child tells you both wishes before suggesting a plan.

  2. Try two fair plans

You need: A sheet of paper and crayons

Use the bus and garden idea. Consider dividing the page or drawing one shared scene. Ask whether each person would have enough room. Choose together; either person can ask for a change. An adult can speak one part.

  3. Check the agreement

You need: The same paper and crayons

Begin your agreed picture together. Pause and ask whether the plan is working for both people. If space runs short, listen again and adjust the drawing or add scrap paper. End by naming one thing each person helped decide.

Talk about it

  • What does each person want?
  • Would both people agree to this plan?
  • What could we change if it stops working?
