Pause and Return to a Small Job

Goal: Divide a small finding task into parts, choose a pause and use a marker to return to it.

For parents: Returning is easier when the next step is visible. Agree on a tiny job and a comfortable stopping place together. Your child may ask for help or finish another day. Breaks meet a need; they are not prizes earned by working through discomfort.

Do together

  1. Make the job small

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Draw two short rows containing stars, moons and circles. Agree to find the stars in the first row together, then decide about the second. Your child circles each star or directs your hand. Check the row without racing or counting mistakes.

  2. Leave a next-step marker

    You need: The picture sheet and folded scrap paper

    At a chosen pause, place the folded paper beside the next row. Say what remains to do, then put the sheet somewhere safe. Choose a comfortable break together. You can stop earlier if needed; no row must be completed to earn rest.

  3. Return with help

    You need: The marked sheet and a crayon

    When your child wants to return, use the marker to find the next part. Finish together, reduce the job or leave it for another day. Discuss whether the marker helped. Keep the aim on finding a next step, not working for longer.
