Create a Small Performance

Goal: Plan and perform a short original scene using ordered actions, a repeated rhythm and expressive choices.

For parents: A performance can be just for you and your child. Clear some floor space, keep sounds comfortable and allow seated acting, gestures or an adult speaking the words. Make up your own story and tune; no costumes, recordings or bought instruments are needed.

Do together

  1. Beginning, change, ending

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Draw three scenes for an original story: Sara starts a pretend garden, wind scatters her paper leaves, and a friend helps gather them. Your child may invent a different story. Decide what happens in each part and how the characters might feel.

  2. Choose a sound and movement

    You need: Your hands and an unbreakable empty bowl with a smooth rim

    Choose a quiet repeated rhythm for one part, using hand taps on the bowl and pauses. Add a comfortable movement to show an event or feeling. Practise starting and finishing together using a visible hand signal.

  3. Perform and revise

    You need: The scene drawings

    Play the scene once, following the drawings. Ask what made the story clear and choose one change, such as a longer pause before the ending. Try again if your child wishes. Swap directing and performing roles; praise a specific choice rather than comparing performers.

Talk about it

  • What changes between the beginning and the ending?
  • How will we know when the rhythm starts?
  • Which change might help someone understand our story?
