Being a Good Learner

Goal: Keep trying when work is hard, learn from mistakes and ask for help in the right way.

For parents: The word 'yet' is powerful: 'I can't read this word yet.' Children who see mistakes as part of learning try harder things.

Do together

  1. The power of yet

    You need: Paper

Write three things your child can't do yet. Stick it up. Tick each one off when they can do it.

  2. Mistake detective

You need: A few sums or words with deliberate mistakes

You made some mistakes — can your child find and fix them? Talk about what you learned from each one.

  3. Help ladder

You need: A card with three steps: think, try, ask

When stuck, first think, then try another way, then ask for help. Practise using it on homework.

Talk about it

  • What did you learn from that mistake?
  • What can you try next?
  • What is something you couldn't do last year that you can do now?
