Press, Lift and Find Colours

Goal: Explore pressing and lifting to make marks, and choose colours during outdoor movement play.

For parents: Stay beside your child. Use washable paint suitable for their age only if already available; crayons are a full alternative. Keep materials out of mouths and wash hands afterwards. Outdoors, choose a clear, level space away from roads and water. Play seated or standing; stay indoors if conditions are unsuitable.

Do together

  1. A cup leaves a ring

You need: Paper, a large unbreakable cup, optional washable paint on a plate or an intact thick crayon

Hold the paper steady. Help your child press the cup's rim into a thin layer of paint, then onto paper and lift it. Name the colour they chose. Without paint, hold the cup while you draw around it and invite your child to add crayon marks. Supervise throughout.

  2. Press here, press there

You need: The same large cup, paper and optional paint or crayon

Make two rings far apart on a fresh sheet. Let your child choose where the next ring goes. Help them lift the cup instead of sliding it. Use crayon outlines if preferred. Ask whether they want the same colour or another available colour.

  3. Point to a colour outside

You need: Your picture and a safe outdoor space

Sit or stand together outside. Point to a colour in your picture. Invite your child to find that colour nearby using an arm gesture or a few steps beside you. Look without collecting anything. Swap who chooses the colour; return indoors whenever you wish.

Talk about it

  • Which colour would you like?
  • What mark did the cup leave?
  • Can you show me that colour outside?
