Our Pretend Kitchen Sounds

Goal: Use large utensils in pretend kitchen play and explore how hearing helps us notice quiet sounds.

For parents: Use only empty, cool, unbreakable utensils and whole cloths, with an adult beside your child. Choose props too big to swallow, keep them away from faces, and put them away if mouthed or damaged. No food, liquids, appliances or cooking are needed. All play can happen seated.

Do together

  1. Stir our pretend daal

You need: A large smooth spoon and an empty unbreakable bowl

Pretend to stir daal while your child holds the bowl steady with help. Swap the holding and stirring jobs. Listen to the spoon sliding gently around the bowl. Let your child tell or show you when the pretend food is ready.

  2. Two kitchen instruments

You need: Two large smooth wooden spoons and a whole hand towel

An adult holds one spoon low while your child gently touches it with the other. Compare that quiet click with rubbing the towel between your hands. Explain that our ears help us hear these sounds. Choose a sound for your kitchen tune. Keep spoons away from faces and sounds comfortable.

  3. A sound for serving

You need: The empty bowl, large spoon and towel

Pretend you are serving lunch to Ammi or another carer. Let your child choose a soft spoon sound to announce that lunch is ready. Practise offering the empty bowl with two hands, then wiping the clear table with the dry towel. Swap cook and visitor roles.

Talk about it

  • Which sound would you like in our tune?
