Look at Homes and Buildings

Goal: Notice doors, windows and roofs, and combine shapes to show a building.

For parents: Homes can be houses, flats or other kinds of shelter. A building may hold several homes. Talk about what you can see without ranking homes or asking for addresses. Stay together at a safe window or use drawings; no visit to a building site is needed.

Do together

  1. Notice two features

    You need: Paper and intact chunky crayons

    Draw a familiar building, or look together from a safe window without climbing. Point out a door and a window if visible. Ask what people use them for. Explain that roofs help keep rain out; roofs need not be pointed.

  2. Two buildings can differ

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Draw a low house and a building with several flats. Add different roofs and windows. Ask what looks alike and different. Explain that several families may have separate homes within one building. Your child can point instead of naming the features.

  3. Build a picture from shapes

    You need: Large adult-prepared paper shapes

    Offer large rectangles, squares and triangles. Help your child arrange a picture of a building. Choose a door, windows and a roof; a roof need not use a triangle. Ask them to show each part. Keep pieces out of mouths and supervise throughout.

  • What looks different about these two roofs?
  • Which shape will you choose for a window?
