Staying Safe at Home

Goal: Recognise that hot things, sharp tools and medicines need an adult, and practise asking a trusted adult for help.

For parents: Teach a calm rule: stop, leave it alone and tell an adult. A trusted adult is someone you know cares for your child and listens. Adults must keep hazards out of reach; knowing a rule does not replace supervision.

Do together

  1. Picture choices

    You need: Paper and crayons

Draw a hot cup, scissors, a medicine bottle and a soft toy. Use drawings only, never real hazards as props. Ask which things need an adult. Rehearse stopping, keeping hands away and telling you.

  2. Please help me

You need: A closed empty cardboard box

Pretend the box is on a high shelf, while keeping it on the floor. Ask what your child could do instead of climbing. Practise 'Please get it for me.' Talk about asking before touching something unfamiliar.

  3. Who can I tell?

You need: Paper and a crayon

Name or draw two trusted adults your child knows. Pretend your child notices a dropped medicine packet in a drawing. Practise leaving it alone and telling an adult straight away. Explain that they can tell another trusted adult if they are not heard.

Talk about it

  • What can you do if something might be hot?
  • Who can help with sharp tools or medicines?
  • What could you say when something is out of reach?
