Letters in My Name

Goal: Recognise their own name in print and name the letters in it.

For parents: A child's own name is the most important word they will ever read. Start there, not with A-B-C in order.

Do together

  1. Name puzzle

    You need: A strip of card, a marker, scissors

    An adult writes your child's name, with its usual capital and small letters, on a whole model card and on separate large letter cards. Mix the separate cards and rebuild the name together using the model. Adults do any cutting and clear away scraps.

  2. Letter hunt

    You need: An old newspaper or magazine, a crayon

    Find and circle the first letter of their name on a page of headlines. How many did you find? Count them.

  3. Name everywhere

    You need: Paper and tape

    Label their cup, their chair and their bed with their name. Point to it whenever you use them: 'Whose cup? It says Ali.'

  • What letter does your name start with?
  • Who else's name starts with the same letter?
  • How many letters are in your name?
