Tricky Words 2

Goal: Read the next tricky words on sight: he, she, we, me, be, was, you, they, all, are, my, her.

For parents: These twelve words make up a huge share of every early reading book. Knowing them lets your child read whole sentences.

Do together

  1. Tricky word pairs

    You need: Two cards for each word

    Play a memory pairs game face down. Read each card aloud when you turn it.

  2. Sentence strips

    You need: Card strips

    An adult writes a short sentence such as 'She was in the car' on separate large word cards. Read it together, mix the cards and help your child rebuild it. Add a full stop to the final word and reread the sentence.

  3. Bingo

    You need: Paper bingo cards with nine tricky words each

    Draw a grid of nine chosen words. Call one word at a time and let your child circle it with a crayon. When three are in a row, read them together. Offer another look and a spoken model whenever needed.
