Listen, Check and Do

Goal: Remember a short spoken instruction, ask for a repeat and check what happened.

For parents: Start with one step, then try two when comfortable. Say the instruction before your child begins. A repeat or a pointing clue is help, not a failure. Speak in a familiar language, and stop before the game feels tiring.

Do together

  1. Say it back

You need: A cup, spoon and cloth

Say, "Put the spoon beside the cup." Invite your child to repeat or show the instruction, then do it. Add a second step, such as folding the cloth, only when ready. Check together and swap who gives the instruction.

  2. Ask for the missing part

    You need: Paper and crayons

Say, "Draw a line, then..." and pause on purpose. Invite your child to ask what comes next. Finish with "add a circle" and draw together. Try asking for a whole instruction again, showing that adults can need reminders too.

  3. Tell the next person

You need: A cup and a folded cloth

Give a short message: "Put the cup on the cloth." Your child tells another family member, or tells you after a brief pause. The listener follows it. Look together at the result and ask whether any part needs repeating.

  • What can you say if you forget?
