Look Again and Draw

Goal: Look closely at a household object, notice colours and shapes, and choose marks to draw what is visible.

For parents: Drawing from observation means looking at something while drawing it. Use a safe object within easy view while seated. A picture need not look like an adult's version. Let your child choose marks, describe what they see or direct your hand. Avoid correcting every line.

Do together

  1. Look before the first mark

    You need: An empty unbreakable cup, paper and crayons

    Set the cup where your child can see it comfortably. Look at its colour and edges. Trace an imagined outline in the air, then draw one big shape on paper. Ask which part of the cup that shape represents.

  2. Look again for one detail

    You need: The cup, paper and crayons

    Pause to look again. Notice a handle, stripe or curved rim if present. Choose one visible detail to add, using a straight or curved line. Talk about the colours you can actually see. There is no need to fill the page.

  3. A different view

    You need: The same cup and drawing materials

    Turn the cup so a different side faces your child. Ask what changed in the view. Make a second small drawing or point out the difference together. Keep both versions; each can record something noticed from its own position.

  • Which line could show that edge?
  • What looks different after we turn the cup?
