Make a Movement Story

Goal: Choose an ordered set of movements and sounds to act out a short story.

For parents: A sequence is a set of things in order. Keep your story to three events. Clear some floor space, use quiet body sounds and let your child move seated or standing. Watch, join in or tell the story for them if that helps.

Do together

  1. Three picture moments

    You need: Paper and crayons

    Together draw three moments: Sara packs a picnic, travels to the garden and rests there. Let your child change the story. Put the pictures in order and choose a movement for each, such as folding hands, moving arms and stretching gently.

  2. A travelling beat

    You need: Your hands

    Make a quiet repeating pair of sounds, such as tap knees then clap. Try it while you tell the travelling part of the story. Invite your child to change one sound and repeat the new pair. Keep movements comfortable.

  3. Our tiny show

    You need: The three pictures

    Place the pictures where you can both see them. Act out the movements in order and use your beat for the journey. Swap storyteller and mover roles. Ask which part your child wants to repeat; an audience is optional.

  • Which sound shall we repeat for the journey?
  • How will our movement show the ending?
