Goal: Read my and fly, then happy and sunny, noticing the vowel sound written with final y.

For parents: At the end of these words, y writes a vowel sound. My and fly share an ending; happy and sunny have a different final sound. Say each naturally in your family's accent. These are useful examples, not a rule for every word ending in y. Start with two words at a time.

Do together

  1. My and fly

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write my and fly, underlining y. Say them naturally and listen to their matching endings. Blend fly with separate /f/ and /l/ sounds before its vowel. Use my in a spoken phrase about a drawing. Help your child read my again.

  2. Happy and sunny

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write happy and sunny. Read each together, tapping its two spoken beats. Point to final y and listen to the last vowel in your usual accent. Explain that it differs from y in my. Help with the middle letters without asking for spelling rules.

  3. Read it in a phrase

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write my happy cat and a sunny day. Read together, helping with any unfamiliar part. Find my, happy and sunny again and point to final y in each. Let your child draw one phrase. Compare the final sounds without changing your family's pronunciation.
