Another Sound for c and g

Goal: Recognise C/c and G/g and try their alternative sounds when reading a few familiar words.

For parents: Before e, i or y, c often represents /s/ and g often represents /j/, as in jam. Try city, face, gem and giant in small sets. This is a pattern, not an always rule: get, girl and give keep the g sound in go. Help with other spellings and keep your family's accent.

Do together

  1. The same letter, another sound

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write C beside c and G beside g. Match each capital to its small letter. Write city and face beneath. Read them together, pointing to c as you say /s/. Help with the other letters; final y in city will get more practice next.

  2. Try g as in gem

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write gem and giant. Explain gem as a precious stone and giant as someone very large in a pretend story. Read together, modelling /j/ for g. Underline the following e or i. Draw a pretend giant; no independent spelling is needed.

  3. A pattern with exceptions

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write get, girl and give. Read them naturally and compare their first sound with gem. Point to the e or i after g: it does not guarantee /j/. Help your child try a sound, blend the word and check its meaning.
