Volume and Picture Graphs

Goal: Compare how much containers hold, and read and make picture graphs.

For parents: Volume: 'Which holds more?' Measure with a small cup — the one that takes more cupfuls holds more. Graphs: every picture stands for one thing (or sometimes more — read the key).

Do together

  1. Cupful count

    You need: Three different bottles or jugs, a small cup, water

    Guess which holds the most. Fill each using the small cup and count the cupfuls. Order them from most to least.

  2. Family favourites graph

    You need: Paper, crayons

    Ask everyone their favourite fruit. Draw one fruit picture per person in columns. Which is most popular? How many more like mango than banana?

  3. Weather graph

    You need: Your weather chart from KG 1

    Turn two weeks of weather into a picture graph. How many sunny days? How many more sunny than rainy?

Talk about it

  • Which container holds more? How do you know?
  • What does each picture stand for?
  • Which is the most popular? The least?
