A Vowel and Final e

Goal: Read a few words with a vowel and final e, and hear matching word endings.

For parents: In cake, a and final e write one vowel sound across k. Try cake and make first, then bike, bone and cube in small sets. This is not a rule for every final e. Say cube naturally: many speakers hear /y/ then /oo/ after /k/. Keep your family's accent.

Do together

  1. A line between letters

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write cake and make. Link a to final e with a curved line underneath, passing below the middle consonant. Blend each word together. Listen to their matching endings. Explain that the linked letters write one vowel sound in these words.

  2. Two more small sets

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    On another day, write bike and like. Model i with final e, then blend each word. Later try bone and home, showing o with final e. Draw or describe each meaning. Keep the sets separate until your child is comfortable.

  3. Read cube together

    You need: Paper and a pencil

    Write cube and tube. Link u to final e and read together in your usual accent. Help with each sound you hear; do not insist these words have equal sound counts. Return to cake and make and listen to their rhyme.
