Big Water Paths

Goal: Use a whole damp cloth to make broad marks, change direction and stop at a chosen place.

For parents: An adult stays beside your child throughout. Choose a low, smooth, washable outside wall in shade, away from roads, sockets and peeling paint. Work within seated reach on dry ground. You dampen a whole cloth with a little water, keeping the supply out of reach. No grip, letters or neat paths are expected.

Do together

  1. A wide mark down

    You need: A whole damp hand towel and a safe washable surface

    Fold the damp towel into a broad pad. Show one gentle downward wipe on the wall, then offer a turn. Let your child hold it however comfortable or guide your hand. Keep water marks above dry ground and stop if the surface becomes slippery.

  2. A path that bends

    You need: The same damp towel and surface

    Move the cloth slowly across, then make a broad curve within easy reach. Invite your child to choose a straight or bending path. Describe the movement as it happens. A clean washable tray indoors is an alternative; wipe any drips yourself.

  3. Choose where to stop

    You need: The damp towel and surface

    Point to a nearby finishing place on the surface. Make a short water path towards it and pause. Your child may choose a different end or direct you. Finish before arms tire. Dry any drips and put the cloth and water away yourself.
