Where Is It?

Goal: Understand and use position words: in, on, under, behind, in front of, next to.

For parents: Position words are maths words — they are the start of describing space and direction. They also help children follow instructions at school.

Do together

  1. Teddy hide and seek

    You need: A soft toy

    Hide the toy and give clues: 'It is under something soft.' Then let your child hide it and tell you where to look.

  2. Obstacle course

    You need: Cushions, a table, a chair

    Crawl under the table, climb over the cushion, walk around the chair. Say each word as they do it.

  3. Put it there

    You need: A cup and a small toy

    Give instructions: 'Put the toy in the cup. On the cup. Behind the cup.' Then swap — they tell you.

Talk about it

  • Where are your shoes? Under the bed?
  • What is next to the TV?
  • Who is sitting in front of you?
