Balance, Roll and Aim

Goal: Explore steady movement, roll towards a target and use in, beside and between during play.

For parents: Stay close on a clear, level, non-slip floor. Use light objects without loose parts. Offer your hand for balance, or play seated with reaching and rolling. Keep targets on the floor and never use furniture as climbing equipment.

Do together

  1. Around and between

You need: Two light cardboard boxes checked by an adult

Place the boxes well apart on the floor. Walk beside one and through the gap between them with your child. Pause with two feet still. Offer a hand. For seated play, move a large soft toy beside and between the boxes.

  2. Roll into the garage

You need: An open cardboard box and a large soft ball or rolled adult sock

Lay the checked box on its side with the opening facing your child. Sit nearby and try rolling the ball into it. Bring the box closer if needed. Say whether the ball went in or stopped beside it. Stop if a sock unrolls.

  3. Send and receive

You need: The same soft ball

Sit opposite your child. Open your hands as the ball rolls towards you, then gently send it back. Invite your child to choose where you sit: near the box or beside it. Later, try a very short gentle toss into waiting hands if they wish.

Talk about it

  • How can we make this gap easier to move through?
  • Did the ball go in or beside the box?
  • Where would you like me to sit?
